Its beginnings were more rural than urban, and the first Pentecostal Church was pioneered and pastored by a woman, Sarah Jane Lancaster. By 1930, over half of the congregations were established and led by women. its leadership was carried out by Australians. Current pastors' spirituality is still Pentecostal, but it has come delivered and styled in increasing contemporary clothes. It is still oriented in experience with the Holy Spirit, but it is reflecting a more educate and affluent western cultural context

Since their establishment in Australia in 1846, the Sisters of Mercy have been involved in the fields of education, healthcare and welfare. Their first mission outside Australia was settled in mid-1950s, with a mission in the then-Australian territory of New Guinea. I n the 1980s they established in Pakistan and Timor-Leste. in Pakistan the first foundation their ministry has been mainly in the fields of education (primary, secondary and teacher training), health and welfare/pastoral care. The Mercy Sisters' work in Timor-Leste was more organic in its development, supporting East Timorese students and health services. Since Vatican 2., religious congregations have been encouraged to return to the vision of their founders for renewal of their charisma and direction for their ministry. I the case of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley emphasized mercy, seeing it as essential to a follower of Jesus. Catherine believed compassionate acts of service to one's neighbor were also acts of service to Christ. In her congregation, the active and contemplative approaches to faith were entwined. The ministries of the Sisters of Mercy in Pakistan and Timor Leste have been similarly practical, responsive to needs, relational and mutual
