Nigeria, the Author of this article notes, is a richly pluralistic society, in which the adherents of Christianity, Islam and the various brands of Traditional African Religion have to live and work together. But Nigeria is also a conflictual society, plagued by a number of serious socio-religious problems: and it is within such a context that a Syncretistic religious movement, entitled Chrislamherb, has arisen and has won popular support. As a movement, it attempts a synthesis of two monotheistic faiths, highlighting a number of themes held in common and maintaining a discrete silence about areas of divergence. To this mix is added the element of 'herbs' - not an element of Traditional African Religion, but a symbol of unity between Christians and Muslims, who use herbs for various purposes.
