Many independent churches represent a deformation and a transformation of African traditional religiosity. If resistance against colonialism and discrimination against Africans are responsible for the emergence of independent churches in Africa, how can the renewed fact that these movements are again growing in contemporary Africa be explained? The phenomenon of the African independent churches are a challenge to evangelization, a challenge that calls for paying more attention to catechesis on healings, to illness and healing in general, to therapy and counselling, to African medicine and cultural crises, to the missionary sanity and health work and, above all, to the salvific meaning of the cross and of suffering. In this context, it is correct to stress that the situation in the continent which forces people to frequent these healing centres, is characterised mostly by economic crises, unemployment, political instability, wars, injustice, marginalization, social disorientation, poverty etc. All these factors spur the people to address themselves to the charlatans of independent churches, looking for a way to survive in their daily life. This means that in Africa a new evangelization should face the problem created in the continent by the independent churches: it should deepen the people's faith and the healing role of the church's pastoral activities. This also means that the church should intensify its evangelizing work for human promotion in Africa. Furthermore, Christianity in Africa will lack something important if it continues to grow and develop on the spirituality of workers and seekers of miracles and on the sentimental worship that offers only temporal consolation to people. Christianity is far more than a religion of consolation and sentimental worship. In other words, Africa needs a Christianity that is truly rooted in Christ's Easter mystery, in which man encounters his personal dignity and the integral growth of his body and spirit, as well as of his culture and his society as a whole L'articolo contiene anche un elenco descrittivo di alcune delle principali chiese indipendenti dell'africa, suddiviso per zone geografiche e principali elementi di connotazione
