Abstract/Sommario: The author believes relations between the U.S. and China over energy need not be as bleak as many portray them. China has yet to find a mechanism powerful enough to promote adoption of energy-saving technologies and new energy against the entrenched interest of the country coal, oil and power industries. China has yet to find a mechanism powerful enough to promote adoption of energy-saving technologies and new energy against the entrenched interest of the country coal, oil and power industries. China began to open its oil and coal sectors for international joint ventures in 1980: Major U.S. oil companies have pursued numerous joint ventures with Chinese companies. A key point of contention between the U.S. and China is over whether or not China is working to " lock up " the world's oil fields and remove oil from the global market. The U.S. and China signed an agreement on cooperation in civilian nuclear energy back in 1985, but the U.S. are still hesitating. The author is confident that the two larger powers need to learn to get along with each other.

Abstract/Sommario: The author chronicles recent political turmoil in the Himalayan kingdom and discusses the new mood of optimism after democracy's restoration. The Maoist message resonated with the masses, and targeted all sections of Nepal's society. The question of the monarchy remains open. Even if the constituent assembly should decide to retain it, it will certainly be a purely ceremonial one.
