Burma's military junta is better positioned than ever before to retain its stranglehold on power. When the army first seized the power in Burma in 1962, it not only took control over the Government, but also assumed economic power. The Burmese military establishment also developed into a state-within-state, a society where army personnel, their families and dependents enjoy a privileged position.. After the last uprising in 1988, the Burmese way to Socialism was abolished, perhaps in attempt to appease the international community, but also because the military had realized that they could make more money in a free-market economy. China's support is the key factor in the junta's staying power. Nothing is going to change until the military remains united and willing to gun down its own people
