The growing vulnerability of the working class and the general decline in employment generation since the advent of economic liberalisation, in the context of the crushing of a government employees' strike in Tamil Nadu and a Supreme Court Bench's remarks on the right to strike work. Employers seek a reversal of the labour laws to the extreme disadvantage of workers, in order to be competitive in the Globalised world". While labour laws have not prevented the tide of liberal policies from flooding the workplace, they remain the only hope for India's working class. "There is an offensive of capital against labour", say Prakash Karat, Polit Bureau member; and "Labour is being side-lined everywhere" Hasubhai Dave adds. The Report of the Second National Commission on Labour takes note of the pernicious effects of the globalisation process on the working class, but its recommendations might do little to mitigate the workers' misery.
