Abstract/Sommario: In the 1830s, the Oman Sultan had colonized Zanzibar before it came under British rule as a British Protectorate in 1890. The Missionary society known as the Universities Mission to Central Africa put is headquarters at Zanzibar. The Missions played an important role in the struggle against slave trade and also in speeding up the emancipation process. The Church is still an important centre for the Anglican Christian community in Zanzibar, even if Christians as a minority group are facing strong opposition from the Muslim community
