The articles (nel fascicolo) were prepared by the Commission of Women of the CBCI. They were presented at the 28th Plenary Assembly of the CBCI held in Jamshedpur on February 13-20, 2008. These reflections were supported by wide-ranging consultations at the local, regional and national levels, involving about 600 persons. In her article: Empowerment of Women in the Church and Society, Prof. Rita Noronha examines the Indian scenario, the causes of gender inequality in family and society. She underlines the positive role of the Church in facilitating empowerment of women, but also the problems of subordiantion of women within the Church. She pints out several approaches to facilitate empowerment of women, both in the Church and Society. In 'Response to the Keynote Adress' Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala says that in the past two decades the Indian bishops have shown a growing concern for the struggles of women. She examines some problems concernig Indian women: selective abortion of female foetuses (she exstimates that in the last 20 years 10 million daughters were killed), and also Christian couples are concerned. Another area of concern linked to the 'misssing girls' is the trafficking in brides: often minors are sold into marriage to men decades older. When it comes to educating the girl child once again Christians fare well. The overall literacy rate in the Christian community is 80,3%, second only to the Jains (94.1%). This is not good enough.
