Abstract/Sommario: Blessed Alphonsa is the first Indian woman to attend the status of the sainthood (12th October 2008). She was born on 19th August 1910 as the fourth child of Joseph and Mary Muttathupadath, in the parish of Kudamaloor, in the State of Kerala. She was baptized with the name of Anna. She had a vision of St Teresa de Lisieux whose life inspired her to become religious. Blessed Alphonsa is the first Indian woman to attend the status of the sainthood (12th October 2008). She was born on 19th August 1910 as the fourth child of Joseph and Mary Muttathupadath, in the parish of Kudamaloor, in the State of Kerala. She was baptized with the name of Anna. She had a vision of St Teresa de Lisieux whose life inspired her to become religious. In 1927 she joined Clarist convent at Bharananganam, with the name of Alphosa.Ahe entered the novitiate on August 1935. During this period she had a severe attack of Haemorrhage, butr she recovered. She made the solemn profession in 1936. During this period she continued to have repeated spells of sickness and pain, but she acepted suffering cheerfully. Her death occurred on July 28th, 1946, unnoticed by the public. Many miracolous healing are attributed to visits to her tomb. One such miracle is the one which has been officially approved by the Congregation fro Canonization of Saints: a child was miraculously cured of a clubfoot. Sr Alphonsa's tomb at Bharananganam has turned to be a great centre of pilgrimage attracting people from far and near.
