Abstract/Sommario: The article deals with the question that is at the core of Muslim-Christian dialogue: what value can a Christian give to the Muslim scriptures? Lumen Gentium and Nostra Aetate urged respect for Muslims but stopped short of acknowledging Islam as an inspired community, or umma. Finally the Author concludes by urging Christians to return to the 'beginning', there to find the origins of their unique faith in Jesus as well as discover unsuspected links with that of Muslims
