China's Conservative Middle Class
Abstract/Sommario:
The author argues that China's rising middle class does not presage a shift toward democracy. The urban middle class has grown very rapidly in the years since the massive Tiananmen protests. These newly affluent middle-class households possess family incomes of at least 80,000 yuan ($ 10.000) per year, the lowest income at which a household can afford to purchase both an apartment and a small car, the sine qua non condition of middle-class prosperity.
