In Egypt citizens equality is still far from being attained: however, since the decline of violence and fundamentalism in 1997, Egyptians began to talk about citizenship, political reforms and democracy. The article focuses on Copts: they do not occupy leading positions in the government or bureaucracy, and they have to face legal and administrative obstacles that deny them the right to build churches.
