Ann Heylen’s research sets out to offer an English-language study of a Chronicle, written in French and hitherto unpublished, of the six years (1915-1921) spent in Inner Mongolia by Joseph Van Oost, a Scheut missionary. Only extracts, specially chosen and arranged in thematic order, are published in this study.

Ann Heylen’s research sets out to offer an English-language study of a Chronicle, written in French and hitherto unpublished, of the six years (1915-1921) spent in Inner Mongolia by Joseph Van Oost, a Scheut missionary. Only extracts, specially chosen and arranged in thematic order, are published in this study.
The preface, written by Jérôme Heyndrickx, the series director, consists of a short biography of Joseph Van Oost (1877-1939). He was “a musician, writer and missionary in Inner Mongolia” where he spent most of his life : from 1902-1912 and from 1914-1929. The book gives voice to a vivid past, which enables to envisage a picture of everyday life in Inner Mongolia, as experienced by the European missionary and the Chinese peasant communities in the early years of the Republic. Selected themes: Climate; Chinese customs; Scheut community; Chinese banditry as socio-political pheneomenon; Political development in Republican China; Beaurocratic reforms, illustrated by the opium policy; International relations durin World War 1. and China modernizatyion. In appendix Joseph Van Oost's numerous publications, bibliography references, a glossary of Chinese characters ans translitterations, a list of Chinese proverbs translated in English and French.
