CICM Missionary Education in Gansu Province During the Late Qing and Early Republic

Abstract/Sommario: The CICM Fathers who were active in Gansu in the period 1878-1922 were only a very small group (not more than 30) within the large contingent of CICM missionaries active in China. The article dwells upon missionary education in Gansu after 1878, putting it in the larger framework of Chinese education at the end of the Qing and the start of the Republic. The article dwells upon missionary education in Gansu after 1878, putting it in the larger framework of Chinese education at the end of the Qing and the start of the Republic. The only goal of education during the Quing Dynsty was to produce bureaucrats and officials. Education was highly elitist. This was especially the case of Gansu, a remote corner of the empire, where the people were always at risk of famine and civil unrest. After 1905, when the official education system underwent profound changes, mission schools became more and more numerous and better organized. Primary and middle schools were established and their curriculum and schedules started to resemble more those of the European schools. In 1914 there were 8.034 Catholic Schools in China, with a student population of 132.840. The bulk of these schools provided primary education and catechism. This was in sharp contrast with the 4.000 Protestant schools and their 113,000 students, yet Protestants payed more attention to higher education and Universities. There were three CICM schools of higher education or colleges, in the Gansu Vicariate: one in Ganzhou, one in Xixiang and one in Qinzhou. The colleges often had difficulties in finding good teachers and suficient numbers of students. Fist and foremost teaching was catechism, Sacred History and prayers. Confucius and Mencius were added in 'recitation hours', so as to equip the future clergy with enough classical scholarship. Pagan classics and natural history were teached, too. In the afternoon classes the schooltime was devoted to calligraphy, history, and geography. In Gansu, however, education seemed a waste of time and money. In addition, missionary education was probably not perceived by the Chinese Christian as a vehicle of upward social mobility. It was perhaps seen as a direct road to priesthood.
