Around the 2. century B.C. at Ajanta, great shrines and monasteries were carved out of the mountain. In the middle of the 5th century A.D., under the rule of Vakataka kings, there was a renewed activity at this magnificent site. The exquisite murals in the "viharas" of this period constitute the only surviving significant body of early paintings. The Ajanta caves are located in the gorge of the Waghora river.
