In the last decade the number of Sri Lankans migrating for jobs has soared. some 150,000 migrated in 1997: by 2005 the number had risen another 60%, nearly 240,000. Now migrant workers comprise 14,5% of the Sri Lankan workforce. Remittance made up nearly 8% of GDP in 2006, four time larger than foreign investments in the country.
