As generally understood, alterity may evoke ideas of something outside, far away, different, beyond the border. The title of the book suggests instead that alterity is not a foreign but a pervasive and ubiquitous reality to be found within any supposedly homogeneous space, an unexpected guest entering the most private rooms of any home. The book, following an established tradition of the Asian Study Centre, deals with phenomena of alterity, descibing them in the context of five different countries of Asia: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, The Philippines and TAiwan. The analysis of the five papers suggests that reasons for the perception of alterity can be found at an ethno-environmental level (i.e. the aboriginals who live their culture in a specific natural habitat), at a social level (when some groups are deemed ontologically other because of political and social expedient), at a religious level (different religions or movements inside the same religion) and when ethnic differences are played out in basically the same socio-cultural milieu (the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia).
