The promotion of the Bible in Contemporary China and Evangelization

Abstract/Sommario: In modern China, the Catholic Church translated the Bible much later than the Protestant Christian Church. However, some Chinese Catholic scholars did take up the task of translation in the early 20th century. The Studium Biblicum of Franciscans, with fr. However, some Chinese Catholic scholars did take up the task of translation in the early 20th century. The Studium Biblicum of Franciscans, with fr. Gabriel Allegra undertook the task of the translation and, at Christmas time 1968 it was finally published in Hong Kong, after 20 years of conscientious work. The first principle the Studium Biblicum followed was that the Bible had to be translated directly from the original text, and it was a mileston for the Chinese Catholic Church. In 1980 the Catholic Church as well as the Protestant Christian Church decided that the reprinting of the Bible would become the new mission of the Church in China. In 1981 the Catholic Church in China re-printed the Complete New Testament ( Xinjing Quanji). In 1983 Bishop Jin Luxian began to translate The New Testament from the New Jerusalem Bible in Shanghai; in 1990 the Old Testament of the Studium Biblicum was published in Beijing, and finally the complete Bible in 1992. But, since the Studium Biblicum Bible was first published in Hong Kong and it was printed in complex Chinese characters with vertical typesetting, it was an unconvenient for most mainland people. In view of this, the Hong Kong Studium Biblicum is preparing a Bible in simplified Chinese characters. Another translation of the Bible was the Catholic Pastoral Bible, published in Hong Kong in 1998. It is easy to read because it is printed in simplified Chinese Characters, but it is a quick translation from English, French and Spanish translations of the Bible: however, even if the translation is not suitable for an academic level and it has many shortcomings, yet it is hard to find an error that pertains to faith or morals in it. The Protestant Christian Churches translated and printed The Bible much earlier than Catholics: by 1955 they had already printed 100,000 copies of the Bible, most of whom were dsetroyed during the Cultural revolution. The need of printing new copies of the Bible led to the formation of the Bible Commitee, and the Najing Amity Printing Press, that became the officially appointed Bible printing press for Protestant Churches in China. At present, there is an urgent need for the Catholic Church in China to deal with the following issues: How to give more emphasis to theprinting and distribution of Bibles throughout China? How to coordinate nationwide and arouse the active participation of local churches? How to get Bibles into the hands of clergy and laity all over the country? [comprimi]
