Abstract/Sommario: The population of Bangladesh has doubled from 14,5 million in 1801 to 28,9 in 1901, up to 130,02 million in 2001. But because of the government initiatives in family planning programs at national level, the family fertility has declined almost near about 50% (6,7 children per woman in 1950-55 to 3,46 children per woman in 2045-2050). But because of the government initiatives in family planning programs at national level, the family fertility has declined almost near about 50% (6,7 children per woman in 1950-55 to 3,46 children per woman in 2045-2050). Steady increase, on the contrary, characterized the expectation of life at birth : from 37,5 years in 19510-55 to 58,4 in 1995-2000. By the year 2050 the number of persons aged 60+ is expected to increase to 40,5 million, 6 times higher than in 2000. The traditional family support system in Bangladesh where the elderly used to live in extended, multigenerational households and rely primarily on the adult children for the economic support and personal care is undergoing a change due to ongoing demographic, social and economic transition. One such significant factor is the participation of women in labour force and consequently less time to spend than they did in the past to care for the elderly family members. Gender issues in ageing are another important concern. In Bangladesh where women continue to be valued less than men, older women's health reflects their life long experience of discrimination, deprivation and neglect. In contrast to normal demographic patterns, women in Bangladesh live shorter than the men; older women also own fewer assets and have less control over family income. A larger majority of older women in Bangladesh are widowed (68%), compared to only 7% of men. this is due to the tradition of marrying older men.

Abstract/Sommario: The article considers the common interest and the increasing co-operation in terms of security and economic development between China and Kazakhstan in the Post-9/11 era. First the article argues that the end of Cold War and the inauguration of a US-led 'War on Terror' bring China and Kazakhstan into a closer partnership. In particular it discusses the recent joint project of oil pipeline construction in the context of War on Terror. From China's perspective, concerns like the insurgency of Islamic extremism and East Turkhistan, the increasing demands for energy for domestic consumption and the strategic consideration of counterbalancing US domination in Central Asia constitutes China's closer affiliation with Kazakhstan. From Kazakhstan's perspective, concerns about consolidating stable post-independent economic development and securing social stability compels Kazakhstan to willingly build a closer partnership with China

The second summarises the results from interviews of Thai government officials and industry representatives. Finally, the general implications of this analysis are considered
