The urban middle class has grown very rapidly in the years since the massive Tiananmen protests. These newly affluent middle-class households possess family incomes of at least 80,000 yuan ($ 10.000) per year, the lowest income at which a household can afford to purchase both an apartment and a small car, the sine qua non condition of middle-class prosperity. Business people, members of the Party elite, but also academics, doctors, engineers as well as government administrators are included in middle-class. Most of them hold the rural population in disdain. The Chinese educated middle class has become a bulwark of the current regime.
